When we started developing TANGOBuilder, we knew we’d have to validate the platform using many  industry examples. These examples had to be structural designs that were already approved by an independent group of experts. As part of our daily operations, we constantly enhance our design algorithms. Every time a new feature is ready, we run these sets of test cases to validate the changes. TANGObuilder computes a set of benchmark examples and performs side-by-side comparisons with reference solutions. Based on the results, our team of experts approves a new release before it is made public.

The recent public launch of our platform garnered significant interest. One of the questions we frequently receive: “Do you have an example or a study case?”. To answer this question we are including in this post one of the standard sample problems included in the 2009 national Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP)  report. Engineers who are already familiar with this design need not generate a new solution by themselves to compare results. The few details required by TANGObuilder are:

  • Material: Steel
  • Use: Office Building
  • Location: W Weber Ave, 402, Stockton, CA 95203, USA
  • No. of Stories: 12
  • Height: 18ft (G), 12.5 ft (2-12)
Building floor plan

The complexity of this case allows to showcase TANGObuilder’s capabilities and its versatility. The building in the example has multiple stories with varying geometries per floor. Another interesting condition: the building is located in a seismic zone. TANGObuilder automatically detects this by processing the location and retrieves the corresponding building codes and loading conditions. TANGObuilder can automatically propose the design of all structural elements including the selection of the special moment frames.  Here’s a link to the full report and a summary of the output.

Mode comparison

As you can see, TANGObuilder’s proposed solution closely matches the solution estimated by structural engineering experts, capturing not only the principal modes but also the principal frequencies of the designs. We created TANGObuilder to give you the power to design complex buildings without  spending multiple hours in the modeling process. Let TANGObuilder do the heavy lifting and propose an initial valid solution, so you can focus on what you enjoy the most and improve the solution based on your unique insights and knowledge.
